Hello Scholars, welcome to the HSC exam guide. Class 12 English 2.1, Song of the Open Road, this poem we studied earlier. If you haven't visited that one please click here to check that one first for a better understanding. Now let's understand activities based on the poem. This topic is divided into 2 parts. In this first part, we will cover activities (brainstorming) A1 to A3. So let's start.
Activity 1
i) Pick out the lines showing that the poet is prepared to enjoy every moment of his journey.
Answer:
The poet is prepared to enjoy every moment of his journey. The lines showing that are as follows-
“Afoot and light-hearted I take to the open road,”
“Healthy, free, the world before me,”
“Henceforth I whimper no more, postpone no more, need nothing,”
“Strong and content I travel the open road.”
(ii) By old delicious burdens? the poet means____
(a) the luggage
(b) the food he carries
c) the stress he bears during the travels
(d) sweet memories of the past
Answer: sweet memories of the past
(ii) The poet is a person who is free from all inhibitions. Discuss how the concept of ‘freedom’ is expressed in the poem.
Answer:
Freedom is the theme of the poem ‘Song of the Open Road’. It has been expressed through the metaphorical space of the open road, where the poet feels free. He is free to choose his own path. He doesn’t care about ‘querulous criticisms,’ of the people. He doesn't need to create contact with powerful people. He is independent.

Activity 2
i ) Following are the activities of the poet related to his Journey on the road. Divide them into two parts as ‘activities the poet will practice’ and ‘activities he will not practice’.
walking along the road though he does not know where it reaches
Complaining about the discomforts during the journey
Postponing the journey
Praying for good fortune
Carrying the fond memories of the good people
Creating contacts with famous and influential people
Striving to achieve high and bright success
Reflecting and developing his own 'self
Answer:
ii) Write down the traits the poet exhibits through the following lines. One is done for you.
Henceforth, I ask for no good fortune-I myself am good fortune - Self-confidence
Henceforth, I whimper no more, postpone no more, need nothing-
Answer- Firmness, self-sufficient
I do not want the constellations any nearer
Answer- Independent
I swear it is impossible for me to get rid of them-
Answer- authenticity
I am filled with them I will fill them in return-
Answer- self-awareness, hopeful
(iii) 'Healthy, free, the world before me'.
Express your views regarding the above line.
Answer:
The speaker is ready to start his journey on the open road to the new world. 'Healthy, free, the world before me' this line depicts that the new world is healthy and free, where he experiences the joy of freedom. In this world, he can do anything he wants to do. He is strong and content enough for his journey.

Activity 3
The poet has used many describing Words such as 'healthy' in this poem.
Make a list and classify them as-
For the world-
For himself
For the road
Answer:
For the world- Healthy, Free
For himself- Light-hearted, Strong, Content
For the road- Open, Long, Brown
